Time for a New Telecom Solution? What Companies Need to Look For

How reliable is your organization’s communication system? Does it work well, or do you need to make frequent repairs? Good telecom systems don’t have much downtime or require much maintenance. Even better, they’re also easy to scale as your business grows. However, to identify if you need a new telecom solution, your company needs to look out for several variables. Keep reading to find out which ones are the most important and to learn a few benefits you can expect from an upgrade.

Read on to learn more about evaluating telecom solutions:, including:

  • Should I Upgrade My Communication Technology Services?

Should I Upgrade My Communication Technology Services?

Here are some signs that it’s time to re-evaluate your current telecom systems.

1. You’re using multiple tools.

It’s common for businesses to use several tools for communication. For instance, you might have different systems for messaging, email, support tickets, file sharing, and video conferencing.

Using numerous software applications can be overwhelming since employees will need to log into multiple accounts and switch between different applications throughout the day. It’s also expensive if you need to pay for individual licenses.

A platform that supports unified communications solves this dilemma. When you streamline all communication needs into one application, it’s easier for employees to connect and collaborate.

When you use a cloud-based unified communication system, you don’t have to install any hardware or get a server to run your system; everything is handled by your service provider. This will include business phone services, video conferencing, internal messaging, and even a contact center if that’s what you need.

2. You’ve experienced security breaches.

If you’ve already had security breaches with your communication software, it’s definitely time to reconsider your options. Unfortunately, any company that uses third-party software is at risk for an attack, and that includes telecom companies. Several recent hacks against AT&T and T-Mobile have resulted in data leaks and, worse, SIM swapping attacks.

Not all hacks result in damage, but even a security breach that doesn’t cause any harm can still lead to regulatory fines. The financial consequences differ based on industry, but it’s an expense you don’t want to incur. If you’ve already been hacked, you can’t afford to keep using a communication system that has security flaws.

3. You experience a lot of downtime.

Downtime costs your business money. If you’ve had more than your fair share of disconnections, downtime, or other issues, it’s time to look at other options. Each time one of your communication systems fails to perform, your business operations are disrupted and employees are thrown off track. Between a lack of productivity and actual customer interruptions, downtime is costly.

You need a reliable communications system to avoid downtime. While there will always be some situations outside your control, you shouldn’t have to deal with interruptions and malfunctions frequently.

4. You call for repairs often.

Once in a while, you’ll need some kind of maintenance or repairs done on your telecommunications system. However, this shouldn’t be something that happens often. If you’re using physical hardware, for example, and you’ve had to repair or replace it multiple times in the last few years, you’re probably due for an upgrade.

One of the best reasons to use a cloud-based telecom system is that updates, patches, and troubleshooting can often be done without having to call out a technician. Even your connected hardware, like network switches and routers, can be updated remotely using software. It’s a hands-off solution for communications.

5. You can’t upgrade your system.

If you’re using legacy telecom systems and can’t upgrade those systems to meet your current needs without a major disruption or expense, it’s time to consider a new solution. While it’s easier to postpone upgrading in order to avoid disruption, the cost of doing so is huge. You’ll be missing out on the features your business really needs to succeed.

Although missing out on features is unfortunate, a more pressing problem is security. If your legacy systems are no longer supported, you can’t keep them updated and patched, which makes them a security risk. Some telecom solution companies don’t stay on top of critical updates, which compromises your security.

Any and all systems you use should be current, regularly updated, and easily maintained. If your system doesn’t meet these basic requirements and you postpone upgrading to new technology, your business is at risk.

6. Your employees are stuck at a desk to make calls.

Are your employees tied to their desks to make calls from a physical phone? While there are some benefits to having a landline, it might actually be slowing you down. For example, some employees might need to take calls in different places, especially if they work remotely. You don’t want them to use their personal phones for work, so the solution is to use a VoIP phone system.

A good VoIP solution also allows employees to seamlessly move calls in progress between devices and applications without having to disconnect. Since the calls are powered by software, employees can use their personal phones while still connecting through the company’s phone number.

When your staff is restricted to a physical desk to do their job, they aren’t going to be as productive. For instance, someone might need to run to a meeting across town, but if they have a call with someone beforehand, they have to stay at their desk and may not have enough time to drive to their meeting. If they were using a VoIP phone service, they could take that call in the car on the way to their meeting.
